Description and lore

Defensive Ditch

A cut trench interrupts the ground before an approach, leaving a raw line of soil and spoil.

Lore and observations

A defensive ditch uses the landscape as an obstacle. Its raw banks interrupt the approach well before an arriving cart reaches the gate.

It needs ordinary attention after rain and traffic. Slumped edges, pooled water or a temporary bridge can distinguish a maintained defense from an abandoned excavation.
